When flying into Baltimore-Washington International Airport, you won't want to be bothered with the hassle that often accompanies arranging for a car rental if you can avoid it. Fortunately, this airport is run pretty efficiently, as evidenced by its having won the 2010 award for being the best airport in its size class, which ranking is based on an Airport Service Quality Survey. Even though you can count on great service, it always helps to be prepared, so here are a few things you might want to know about BWI (also known as Thurgood Marshall Airport) and renting a car there, so as to minimize any potential hangups.
The great thing about car rental at BWI is that recently a huge, spacious facility was opened up to accommodate the busy traffic of international travel. The facility is located at the junction of Stoney Run Rd. and New Ridge Rd., which is easily reachable via the free shuttle service that carries travelers to and from the airport. The shuttles leave the airport approximately every 10 minutes so if you miss one, you won't have long to wait before the next one comes along. To locate the shuttle area, go to the lower level of the airport and look for the signs directing you to ground transportation shuttle service. The ride to the car rental facility is only about 10 minutes, in case you need to plan on a tight schedule.
BWI is located in northern Anne Arundel County of Maryland, about 10 miles south of Baltimore itself and about 30 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., so if either of these are your destination, you won't have far to travel, but the traffic can still be very congested, depending on the time of day you're driving. Give yourself plenty of time to cover these short distances, in case you get caught up in traffic.
When returning a vehicle, there are road signs on all roads surrounding the airport which point to the car rental facility, so as soon as you get close to the airport, you'll be directed to the proper location.
